Microsoft May Launch Surface Tablet at Just $199

On October 26, 2012, Microsoft will launch its entry-level Windows RT tablet, the Surface. It is now rumored that the Surface will launch for just $199, despite being well aware of the fact that this low price point would push its vendor partners out of the market.
On Thursday, Digitimes cited multiple unnamed sources who said that Microsoft’s hardware partners are very worried about the possibility of a $199 Surface tablet. Unless Microsoft only sells the Surface in the U.S., its partners, including ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, and Samsung, may stop developing Windows RT tablets since they would not be able to compete at that price.
The Digitimes report states that Microsoft knows that it is upsetting its partners, but doesn’t seem to care. Digitimes’ Monica Chen wrote:
“The sources pointed out that Microsoft is fully aware that its actions have greatly offended its notebook clients, and therefore is trying to achieve success and acquire at least 30% share in the tablet PC market,. A price of US$199 is expected to allow the company to achieve its needed goal.”
