Linguistic Misconceptions

  If we ask ourselves the simple question of, whose speech is better, mine or theirs?  We can come to a common understanding.  There is no exact answer to that question, but studies have been conducted and conclusions can be drawn from these studies.  Author, Donna Jo Napoli, states, “The fact that variation in language is both unavoidable and sometimes a result of esthetic and political choices does not mean that educational institutions should not insist that children master whatever language has been deemed the standard-just for purely practical reasons (Napoli).”   This statement has been accepted among many individuals self-consciously.  If we think of this as a choice it makes much more sense…
